Jewelry has been an essential aspect to human dress since before Egyptian times.  In the beginning jewelry was worn as symbolic or spiritual but that is still true for many people.  History tells us jewelry has always been worn to express rank, superstitions, religion, wealth, emotions or some personal intent.
           
Among Christians the cross is the most prominent and widely used symbol.  The cross is often added to other symbols to further explain its significance.   The Miraculous Medal, for instance, bears a cross on its reverse side along with the symbols of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  The Rosary bears a crucifix on one end and Four and Five-way medals are designed in the form of a cross.  The symbol of a fish is synonymous with Christianity and is often coupled with a cross and/or crucifix.
           
In the beginning Christians wore forms of jewelry (predominately the icthus or fish) to identify themselves to one another.  During the Dark Ages religious symbols were worn to ward off evil spirits or again, to identify themselves as Christian. Today, we have not stopped this ritual.  Many forms of religious jewelry speak our faith, tell our personal interest, or to whom we rely for spiritual support.
           
The dove is the most widely recognized symbol of confirmation because the dove is universally known as the symbol of the Holy Spirit.  However, there are many other forms of jewelry acceptable as Confirmation presents.
